DTF on Rayon & Viscose: Heat-Sensitive Fabric Guide
Rayon and viscose garments can be soft and drapey, but those same characteristics can make them sensitive to heat, pressure, moisture, and surface distortion. Do not treat “rayon” as a single DTF recipe.
Rayon and viscose vary widely
Garments may use different fiber blends, knits, dyes, finishes, weights, and constructions even when the label uses the same general fiber name. Check the exact garment manufacturer's care and heat limitations before choosing an application process.
Why heat can be a problem
Some rayon/viscose fabrics can develop shine, flattening, color change, shrinking, distortion, or texture damage under excessive heat or pressure. A process that works on one garment is not proof that another style will tolerate it.
Use transfer-specific instructions
Follow the temperature, time, pressure, and peel method supplied for the exact transfer and confirm that the garment can tolerate those conditions. Do not use a generic rayon temperature chart or compensate for a lower temperature by inventing a longer dwell time.
Blends still need testing
A rayon-polyester or rayon-spandex percentage does not automatically determine the correct process. Stretch fibers, dyes, coatings, and garment construction can change the result. Test the exact style and color you plan to sell.
Moisture and fabric condition
Rayon can absorb moisture readily. Store garments according to manufacturer guidance and make sure the product is in a normal, dry condition before application. Do not add an arbitrary pre-press cycle unless the transfer or garment workflow calls for it.
Pressure and surface marks
Excess pressure can leave platen or seam impressions on some delicate fabrics. Use the pressure guidance for the exact transfer and press, and place the design on a flat area without raised seams or closures beneath it.
Before pressing
- Identify the exact garment and fiber blend.
- Review manufacturer heat and care information.
- Check for coatings, embellishments, seams, and stretch panels.
- Read the transfer-specific instructions.
- Verify press consistency.
- Test one sample in the actual garment color.
Inspect the sample
After application and cooling as instructed, inspect for:
- shine or glazing
- color shift
- fabric flattening
- shrinking or distortion
- seam or platen impressions
- edge lifting or incomplete release
- loss of expected stretch or drape
What if the garment changes appearance?
Stop. Do not automatically add or subtract heat, time, or pressure. Verify whether the garment is compatible with the transfer process and contact the supplier when the supported settings are unclear.
Placement considerations
Keep artwork away from thick seams, buttons, zippers, pockets, and other raised areas when possible. Large solid designs also cover more of a lightweight fabric's surface than open artwork, which can affect the finished drape.
Care guidance
Follow care instructions supported by the transfer and garment. Do not promise a universal wash-life number or dryer method for rayon/viscose apparel.
Rayon/viscose checklist
- Exact garment style and blend identified
- Heat limits reviewed
- Coatings and embellishments checked
- Transfer-specific process available
- Flat application area selected
- Representative sample tested
- Shine, color, shrinkage, and distortion inspected
- Normal care test documented
Common questions
Can DTF be applied to rayon?
Possibly, when the exact garment and transfer are compatible. Because rayon can be heat-sensitive, sample testing is especially important.
What temperature should I use on viscose?
Use the transfer-specific instructions only when those conditions are within the garment's heat limits. There is no universal viscose DTF temperature.
Should I increase time if I lower the heat?
Do not invent compensation rules. Follow supplier guidance and test the supported process.
Why did my rayon garment become shiny?
Heat or pressure may have changed the fabric surface. Stop the run, verify compatibility, and review the garment and transfer instructions.
