Press settings

5 questions
🌡️ What press temperature should I use?
290°F (143°C) for cotton and cotton blends. 270°F for polyester. 250°F for tri-blends and performance fabrics. We test every batch at 290°F first — if it presses clean at 290 we ship it.
⏱️ How long do I press?
Pre-press the garment 5 seconds to remove moisture. Place the transfer film side up. Press 15 seconds at the temperature above. Cool peel — wait until the film is room temperature. Repress through parchment or Teflon for 5 seconds after peeling to lock the ink.
💪 What pressure setting?
Medium-firm. If your press has a 1–9 dial, set 6–7. If it has a torque indicator, target 4–6 PSI on the garment. Too light = poor adhesion. Too heavy = ink sinks through and reduces stretch.
❄️ Cold peel or hot peel?
Always cold peel for our DTF transfers. Wait until the film is fully room temperature. Hot peeling lifts ink off the garment and ruins the print. Set a timer if you have to — impatience kills more prints than bad files.
🔧 No heat press — can I use an iron?
Yes, but expect inconsistency. Iron on cotton setting (no steam). Press 30–45 seconds with firm two-hand pressure. Move slowly across the whole transfer twice. Cool peel. Press a second time through parchment for 10 seconds. Heat-press is still the right answer for production work.

Fabric compatibility

5 questions
👕 What fabrics work best?
Cotton: best. Cotton-poly blends (50/50 up to 65/35): excellent. 100% polyester: works but drop temp to 270°F. Tri-blends and rayon: works at 250°F with careful timing. Performance fabrics with built-in stretch: usually fine at 250°F.
🖤 Will DTF work on dark fabrics?
Yes. DTF transfers include a white underlayer, so colors stay vivid on black, navy, dark heather. This is the main reason DTF beats vinyl on dark garments.
🚫 What fabrics should I avoid?
Waterproof coatings, nylon (without specific testing), leather, vinyl, anything that melts under 250°F. Also avoid fabrics treated with anti-microbial or stain-resistant coatings — the ink won't bond to the treatment.
🧮 Can I press on hats?
Yes. Use a hat press (cap press) or a small platen on a regular press. Same temp and time as t-shirts. Lighter pressure on stretch-fit caps to avoid distorting the band. We sell transfers sized for hats.
🎒 Do DTF transfers work on canvas bags or aprons?
Yes. Canvas, denim, twill all work great. The thicker weave helps with adhesion. Stick with 290°F and 15 second press.

Storage & shelf life

3 questions
📅 How long do unpressed transfers last?
Stored properly: 6–12 months. Stored properly means cool, dry, dark, flat. Don't fold them, don't stack heavy things on them, don't leave them in a hot car or garage.
📥 How should I store extras?
Flat, in original packaging or a folder. Below 75°F. Away from direct sunlight. Below 50% humidity if you live somewhere humid — throw a silica gel pack in the box.
❄️ Can I refrigerate or freeze them?
No. Condensation when you bring them back to room temp will damage the film. Stick with room temp dry storage.

Troubleshooting

5 questions
💔 Print cracked after washing — what went wrong?
Most common: press wasn't hot enough, pressure too light, or no repress after peeling. Test at 290°F / 15s / firm pressure / cold peel / 5s repress. If that holds, original press was the issue. If test also fails, email a photo to support@inkmerge.com.
🚫 Transfer didn't release from the film.
Hot peel attempt. Or fabric coating blocking adhesion. Or press time too short. Re-press through parchment at 290°F for 20 seconds, let cool fully, try peeling again. If still stuck, email us.
⚪ White underlayer showing around dark colors.
File issue, not a press issue. Art likely had a white background or anti-aliased edges. Re-export with transparent background and hard edges. For library transfers, this shouldn't happen — email us.
🌫️ Print faded after first wash.
Wash incorrectly. Always wash inside-out, cold or warm water (not hot), tumble dry low or hang dry. Don't iron the print. Don't dry-clean. If first wash was correct and print still faded, it's a defect — photo + order # to support@inkmerge.com.
🎨 Colors look different from the preview.
Your monitor is RGB. Print is CMYK. Two color spaces don't match perfectly. Bright neons, deep purples, fluorescent oranges shift most. For exact brand matching, request a Pantone proof when you upload — paid add-on but the only way to nail brand colors.

Custom orders & gang sheets

6 questions
📂 What file format should I upload?
PNG with transparent background. 300 DPI. CMYK color space (RGB works but expect minor color shifts). PSD and AI files accepted but flatten before upload.
🔤 Minimum size for legible text?
14 pt minimum for printed text on a t-shirt. Smaller than 14 pt risks character bleeding together at press temperature. For maximum readability, 18 pt or larger.
✅ Do you check files before printing?
Yes — auto-check for resolution, transparency, color space. Human review on flagged files. If something looks off, we email you before printing. We never just print broken files and ship junk.
📦 Can I order a sample first?
Yes. Order a single transfer in your target design and size. Same 24-48 hour shipping. For a bulk run, samples are the move — pressure-test on your actual fabric before ordering 200.
🧩 What's a gang sheet?
A gang sheet packs multiple designs onto one sheet so you pay by total square inches instead of per design. Use when you have 4+ different designs at the same size. Our gang sheet builder arranges designs visually.
💼 Do you do volume / wholesale?
Yes. For 50+ transfers per order or recurring monthly volume, fill out the B2B Fulfillment form. Custom quote within 24 hours. Net-30 terms available after 3 paid orders.
